This week we are looking at a resource that has been around for over 10 years but many teachers have never heard of it. I am talking about a website called Watch Know Learn. The site was launched by Wikipedia co-founder, Larry Sanger in 2008 as a collective video library, curated with a wiki style philosophy.
Watch Know Learn is in the business of indexing educational videos and placing them in more than 5000 categories. The videos are sourced from familiar places like YouTube and Vimeo, TeacherTube and many other video streaming platforms.
You can search for videos by drilling down through the directory. Here is the social studies tree for example. Drilling down to find videos on Australian culture.
This search finds videos from a wide range of sources including HowStuffWorks.com, ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commision) as well as YouTube and PBS.
When you click on the videos some will play directly on the site (embedded) and others link to an offsite hosted video.
You can also search for videos and filter them according to age. This can be a wonderful way to find free video content for your classroom. In the search below we looked for videos on the water cycle. The results showed 200 results and shows the category matches as well.
